Summary

This role is designed for a seasoned engineer who lives at the intersection of deep technical debugging and high-level client strategy. You aren't just answering tickets; you’re an architectural consultant for massive brands like Meta and CNN. The ideal candidate has a "developer’s brain" but thrives in a customer-facing environment, possessing expert-level knowledge of the WordPress core, PHP, and JavaScript, along with experience navigating complex enterprise infrastructures. The position offers a rare blend of stability and flexibility. While the role is fully remote with an open vacation policy, it requires a commitment to a 24/7 support cycle, including weekend and holiday shifts. The compensation is highly competitive ($70k–$170k+), and because Automattic is a pioneer in distributed work, you'll join a mature, global culture that values clear written communication and "solving problems twice" (fixing the root cause, not just the symptom). **You might be a good fit if you:** * Are a U.S. citizen who prefers solving complex architectural puzzles over building new features from scratch. * Have professional experience with tools like WP-CLI, Kibana, New Relic, and Git. * Can remain calm and articulate when explaining critical site outages to executive-level stakeholders. * Genuinely enjoy deep-dive debugging and reading other people’s code to find performance bottlenecks.
