Location: Remote
Salary: $70,000 – $170,000/yr
Type: Full-time
This role is ideal for experienced, mid-level software engineers who are passionate about the open web and "owning" their code end-to-end. While the stack primarily focuses on **PHP and JavaScript**, the team values polyglots who understand deep architectural abstractions rather than just syntax. You should have a proven track record of shipping to a massive, diverse user base (think WooCommerce or Tumblr scale) and be comfortable working in a highly autonomous, distributed environment. The compensation is competitive and transparent, ranging from **$70,000 to $170,000 USD** (paid in local currency), with a flat base salary structure that avoids complex bonuses. The culture is truly remote-first and global, offering an open vacation policy and a unique "work when you feel best" philosophy. You’ll also have the rare chance to contribute to major open-source projects and travel internationally for 3–4 weeks a year for team meetups. **You might be a good fit if you:** * View debugging complex problems as a fun challenge rather than a chore. * Are comfortable becoming an expert in PHP and JS, even if they aren't your primary languages yet. * Value "shipping often" and can thrive with peer code reviews and daily deployments. * Want to work on products that prioritize user data ownership over "walled gardens."
WordPress doesn’t try to keep its users inside walled gardens, a rare thing in a world that is dangerously moving away from the open web. Instead, WordPress gives them the freedom to build a business website, an online store, or a personal blog – the way they like it. Big sites or small, using the community-run [open source project](https://wordpress.org/) or Automattic’s [WordPress.com](https://wordpress.com/), vanilla or customized with hundreds of plugins, WordPress users always get to own and control their data, their expression, and their freedom.
We’re always looking for talented and experienced engineers worldwide, excited to help Automattic’s product ecosystem, and join our mission to make the web a better place.
