Work type: remote
Location: Home based - Worldwide
Type: Full-time
This role is designed for mid-level engineers who are obsessed with software precision, efficiency, and deep-system performance. It is a "choose your own adventure" performance track where you can apply your expertise across various layers of the stack—from the Linux kernel and low-level assembly to high-level runtimes like Python, Go, or Rust. Canonical is specifically looking for "performance and correctness" (percorr) specialists who have the academic rigor and technical curiosity to unblock "dark" areas of test harnesses and improve entire codebases.
The role offers exceptional global flexibility, being fully remote with a 1,000+ person distributed team across 70 countries. A standout feature is the "sprint" culture: you’ll travel internationally two to four times a year for in-person strategy sessions. Additionally, the company encourages internal mobility, allowing engineers to rotate between different product teams every two years to maintain fresh perspectives and broaden their technical impact.
**You might be a good fit if you...**
* Have an exceptional academic background in Computer Science, Math, or Physics.
* Possess deep knowledge of low-level systems (CPU architecture, memory, or kernel scheduling).
* Are comfortable leading cultural shifts in how teams approach benchmarking and profiling.
* Enjoy identifying and fixing the "tricky" bugs that others might miss in complex, distributed systems.
