This role is designed for senior-level engineers who want to apply their expertise to AI safety. The organization is looking for either experienced Machine Learning Engineers or seasoned Software Engineers ready to transition into the research space. They are specifically recruiting for three "tracks": **ML Practitioners** (Model training/PyTorch), **HPC Specialists** (Kubernetes/CUDA), or **Technical Leaders** (System architecture/Project Management). The role offers significant geographic flexibility, supporting fully remote work worldwide (with a 2-hour daily overlap with Berkeley) or in-person collaboration in California. The compensation is highly competitive for the non-profit sector ($150k–$250k), and the work is high-impact—your research could influence major AI labs like OpenAI and Anthropic. The hiring process includes a practical 1-2 week paid work trial to ensure mutual fit. **You might be a good fit if you...** * Have deep expertise in Python and a track record of mentoring other engineers. * Can bridge the gap between academic research and production-level engineering. * Are motivated by "red-teaming" frontier models and solving existential AI risks. * Are comfortable navigating cluster orchestrators like SLURM or Kubernetes to handle massive compute loads.
