Senior Systems Engineer at Automattic

This role is designed for a seasoned Systems Engineer who thrives on managing high-traffic, global infrastructure. The ideal candidate isn't just a "cloud user"

Work type: remote

Location: Remote

Salary: $120,000 – $180,000/yr

Type: Full-time

Summary

This role is designed for a seasoned Systems Engineer who thrives on managing high-traffic, global infrastructure. The ideal candidate isn't just a "cloud user" but someone who understands the "bare metal" and lower-level systems stacks (kernel, filesystems, and memory). You should have deep experience scaling massive Nginx setups and MySQL/MariaDB deployments that handle billions of monthly page views across private data centers. The compensation is highly competitive ($120k–$180k+) and location-agnostic, meaning you receive a global-tier salary regardless of where you live. As a fully remote pioneer, the company offers an open vacation policy and a "vertically integrated" team structure where you have total ownership over the stack. Expect a culture of deep technical autonomy, minimal friction, and a strong commitment to Open Source. **You might be a good fit if you:** * Have mastered the art of debugging PHP applications and tuning MySQL at a massive scale. * Prefer working on private data center infrastructure rather than just managed cloud services. * Are an autonomous "builder" who can architect and prototype solutions with extreme attention to detail. * Enjoy high-stakes environments where "rapid response" means answering developer questions in seconds.
