This role is ideal for a heavyweight Systems or Software Engineer with at least 7 years of experience in high-scale infrastructure. You should have a deep background in distributed storage systems and feel equally comfortable writing high-performance code in Go or C++ as you are diving into the internals of open-source databases. Specifically, they are looking for someone who can bridge the gap between building automated control planes and optimizing data-driven access patterns for massive workloads. The compensation is a major standout, offering a base salary up to $303,900 plus equity. As a fully remote "Staff" level position, it offers high autonomy and the chance to influence the architectural direction of a platform serving 116 million daily users. You’ll also have the unique opportunity to contribute directly back to open-source communities and mentor other engineers on vector storage and machine learning infrastructure. **You might be a good fit if you:** * Have a track record of contributing features or bug fixes to major open-source storage projects. * Enjoy "under the hood" engineering—optimizing latency and scalability at the system level rather than just building APIs. * Are comfortable with a mix of software development and hands-on systems operations, including participating in an on-call rotation. * Have specific experience or interest in machine learning storage and vector databases.

The position is a blend of software engineering and systems engineering, with a strong focus on building and evolving control and data planes, improving underlying systems, and writing software that implements critical workflows to automate and enhance the operation of our large-scale storage infrastructure.
We also work with our product teams to make the underlying Storage technologies work better for Reddit’s main workloads, including defining and improving the application’s data models and data access patterns, and lots of times, this also involves data-driven analysis and tuning of the Storage stack to make step function improvements to the end-to-end data path. There is a substantial amount of troubleshooting and analysis to understand the real problems we face as we scale, and our customer’s workloads change.
